Background

While living in a world of constant change,  it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to moments we get for ourselves.

One of these moments being the act of eating. Not just for the sake of satisfying our hunger, but for the nourishment, enjoyment, and pleasure of it all.

Process

After various rounds of sketching ideation, and feedback on concepts for moving tables, the next step was to create a series of models to understand and test this idea.

The initial prototypes were used to understand the relationships between user and table.

The second round of prototypes taught me the feasibility of the more refined version of the design.

Market

What sets “Neu” apart from other dining tables on the market is that this table is designed to be touched and carried.

It can be easily transported from the kitchen to any other place in a household, where food is going to be enjoyed.

Design Elements

The senses play a big role in the design elements of this table. In order to enhance the dining experience overall, this table is carefully thought out to enhance the senses first and foremost. We do this by implementing certain tactile materials, movement, and playfulness.

Neu creates a deeper engagement by breaking away from conventional dining tables in favor of a table that is modular and very versatile for a contemporary lifestyle and interior.

Outcomes

Our current proposal is a dynamic and more user engaging dining table that promotes mindful eating as different senses are engaged and enhanced as a result of design and materials.

This dining table is equipped with a mechanism that allows for adapting the height of the table, accommodating for informal and formal settings.

Neu also comes with a ceramic dinnerware set that is specifically designed to complement the table and the experience.

When all the elements of the table come together, the center point where the handles meet becomes a place for a sharing platter, creating an opportunity for social connection and community creation.
